March 2012: Hong Kong - Macau Trip Report

We spent 4 days and 3 nights in Hong Kong, with a side day trip in Macau last March. It was a do-it-yourself (DIY) trip and it was a indeed a challenge. Many thanks to Hong Kong thread in PinoyExchange.com, we survived it.

Let me walk you through with our Hong Kong – Macau escapade and let this blog entry be your virtual tour guide.

Day 1:
The Flight
  • It was 5:40 AM flight! Arrived in NAIA Terminal 3 at around 4:00 AM, and left the car for three days at the airport overnight parking - Php50 per night, cheaper than Park N’ Fly. A word of advice,      call a week before your flight to reserve a parking space for your car, because oftentimes, the overnight parking is FULL. Tip: You can also park you car in Terminal 2 or the parking across Old Domestic Airport.
  • Flight check in procedure:
    • Web Check In Counter
    • Pay Travel Tax - Php1,620 for each person
    • Pay Terminal Fee – Php550.00 for each person
    • Breakfast at the airport – Jollibee
    • Immigration – No mobile phones and cameras allowed. Take off your cap/ hat.
    • Boarding – First time with Cebu Pacific and flight was smooth but delayed by 15 minutes. That’s tolerable.
    • Rest. Sleep.

  • Welcome to Hong Kong!
    • Arrived at around 8:00 am in Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA);
    • Claim baggage. Finish Immigration – Again, no mobile phones and cameras allowed. Take off your cap/ hat.
    • Change small amount of USD to buy Octopus card. Tip: Never change ALL your money at the airport because their rates were ripped off.
    • The place where you buy your Octopus Card is at the Customer Service Counter located in  the Arrivals Hall near Burger King and Maxim’s.

    • Ride BusA21 to get to Mirador Mansion in Tsim Sha Tsui (TST), where Cosmic Guesthouse is. TST is 13th bus stop from the airport and there’s an electronic signboard on the bus, be mindful on the number of bus stops. The fare is HKD33 each person.
Tsim Sha Tsui (TST)

    • TST is one of the busiest area in HK. This is the place where most of hostels were located due to its great location, thus, it's perfect for shopping and perfect for lodging
    • Change whole USD to Wing Hoi Money Exchange, at the ground floor of Mirador Mansion. Wing Hoi has competitive exchange rates (average rate is USD1 = HKD7.7). They are open 8:00 am to 8:00 pm and closed on Sundays.
    • Settled billings with Cosmic Guesthouse. Left luggage. It was safe so there is no need to worry. Check in time is 2:00 pm and it was only 11:00 am back then, so we have to change our itinerary to not waste a single time.
    • Purchase discounted tickets to China Travel Services (CTS) in Alpha House Building, just across Chungking Mansion, also in TST.

Cosmic Guesthouse Check In
  • After we spent 2 hours in the garden, we went back to TST at around 1pm to had lunch. Finally, at 2:00 PM, we checked in to our room. The room was small but it was clean. Cosmic Guesthouse is recommended for travelers with tight budget. Not to mention, it’s location is just one minute away from TST MTR Station.
  • Room type - “Deluxe 3 Guests - 1 Double Bed 1 Single Bed”
  • Room rate – HKD360 per night. Total cost for the room was HKD1,080 (HKD360x3nights), HKD440 was deposited and paid via credit card.

  • Walk to MTR station in TST. Ride train going to Central Station (red line)
  • From Central Station, Exit J2 and walk to the Peak Terminus then ride the Peak Tram. It was a looong steep road - you have been warned! It was also suggested to take bus 15C from Star Ferry Pier after you exit Central Station but we weren’t able to find them. I am not sure, it there was Exit K, in order to find Star Ferry Pier, but I think I saw that on the map after we exit the Station from J2. Again, I am not sure about this.
  • Ride the Peak Tram. Take pictures with the famous personalities around the world in Madam Tussauds and view Hong Kong sky line at night.
  • The Peak is open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and be aware of scheduled maintenance whenever you plan to visit.
